What is First Phase rugby?
Well, my name is Daniel Hatton and I was born and raised in Greystones, Co. Wicklow. Playing rugby was a big part of my life as a kid in primary and secondary school and now as a parent I’m back in the rugby sphere again.
I have completed the IRFU Child and Youth Coaching Badges, as well as the necessary Safeguarding Levels 1 & 2. Added to these I hold a First Responders First Aid Certificate and I am Garda Vetted in GRFC, Templecarrig School and St. Patricks National School.
I am a Mini and Youth rugby coach with Greystones RFC and I also coach at Templecarrig Secondary School in Greystones. Alongside my coaching over the last 6 years, I bring 20+ years experience in the fitness industry, with a strong focus on safe movement, long-term development and confidence-building. While coaching teams for my three sons, I’ve seen just how positive rugby can be when introduced the right way.
I’ve also seen the challenge faced by children who become interested in rugby later than their peers — kids who are keen to learn but feel left behind or unsure when stepping into a new school or new club environment.
First Phase Rugby has been primarily created for those children.
This term-long programme provides a supportive, structured starting point where beginners can learn the fundamentals, understand the game and build confidence before joining a club or trying out for their school. There’s no pressure, no comparison and no expectation beyond effort and enjoyment.
Everyone deserves a good first experience. First Phase Rugby is where that experience begins.
