Parenting in Rugby

A key source for all of First Phase directives are driven and sourced from the IRFU. For our region, Leinster Rugby emphasizes positive parenting in sport, focusing on fun, fair play and supporting development over winning, through partnerships with organizations like Working with Parents in Sport (WWPIS), providing guidance on managing car journeys, handling selections and creating a supportive home environment for young athletes' success on and off the pitch, with parents encouraged to be role models for respect, punctuality and positive behaviour.

Key Parenting Principles

  • Support, Don't Coach: Let coaches coach; your role is to encourage and support, not to shout instructions.

  • Focus on Fun & Development: Remember kids play for enjoyment, prioritizing skill learning and participation over intense competition.

  • Be a Role Model: Show respect for referees, opponents, and coaches; be punctual and positive.

  • Manage Emotions: Keep car journeys positive; avoid criticising players, coaches, or officials after matches.

  • Ensure Safety: Adhere to child welfare policies, especially regarding changing rooms and health awareness.

What’s after first phase?

Completing First Phase Rugby is just the beginning. If the new school year hasn’t started yet, players are encouraged to repeat the programme to further develop skills, confidence, and game understanding in a familiar, supportive environment. From there, children are well prepared to take the next step that suits them best — whether that’s joining a local rugby club to continue their rugby journey, getting involved with their school team or doing both. First Phase Rugby is designed to prepare players for all pathways, giving them the confidence and foundation they need to enjoy rugby wherever it takes them next.
